Little houses

My dollhouse-loving nieces have been visiting, and we've been making wonderful little houses.  One was a house made from a cardboard box and pictures cut out of catalogs, and the others were edible log cabins made of pretzels in the style of gingerbread houses - one for humans (with Nutella and candy and dried fruit), and one for birds to eat (with peanut butter, nuts, dried fruit, and berries.)

Cardboard house:

Natalie is very creative and a natural born miniaturist.

And of course they wanted the dollhouse to have a tiny dollhouse in it.  (And that's James Bond greeting us at the door.)

Edible houses:

This is Natalie (with red hair) and a friend.

This is me with Amelia, covered in peanut butter and chocolate.

Your nieces are certainly talented ladies. So this love for dollhouses and miniatures must lie in the family. :D

I was glad to read that a very good time was had by all.

They certainly are, and it certainly does! In fact, I'll post a picture of my mom playing with her childhood dollhouse soon. My sisters and I grew up playing with it, and now these nieces have it, and I have my own house and roomboxes. We all love tiny things. :D

And yes, we've been having a marvelous time! Busy busy busy, but a lot of fun. We already celebrated Christmas last night, in fact, with the whole huge family. I'm kind of looking forward to Christmas day itself, when I'll be able to do nothing at all (or maybe clean up my messy house and wash dishes and things.)

I hope you will have a lovely Christmas Day, on which you will also have time to relax.

Btw, Amelie resembles you a lot. :D

I would have never though of making one for the birds. Too cute!

Have a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year.

Thanks! Well I made a gingerbread house once before, and by the time we finally got around to eating it, it tasted kind of gross. :P I figured one house for people to eat would be enough.

Thank you! Same to you!

So cute! Looks like you had fun.

These are all so cute! The cardboard house totally looks like a project I would have done when I was a little girl. :) And the food houses look yummy! :)

Looks like so much fun!

It was loads of fun!

This is so adorable! And I love the edible house for the birds; I just might have to nick that idea from you. :)

Thank you! I wanted to do a gingerbreadish house, but I knew from experience that they're not much fun to eat, especially after sitting around for a few days. Plus I didn't want the kids to have to wait while cooking gingerbread etc. This worked out perfectly, and took the perfect amount of time and hands-on work for their attention spans.

Love the idea of using magazine cutouts, and a birdhouse that's not for birds to live in but to eat is genius. Your nieces are cute too.

[identity profile] grace-poppy.livejournal.com 2008-12-25 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! (Yes, they are very cute.)

How great of you to provide such entertainment! I'd want to visit you all the time!

And cute nieces, they have the most beautiful hair.

It's fun being the artsy craftsy aunt! :D And yes, they DO have beautiful hair. It glows.

That cardboard box house is made of awesome! I love miniatures made from found items around the home. (My current room box was made out of painted cereal boxes.) The idea of using cutouts from catalogues to furnish it is brilliant. Good job!

I always loved making things from found items when I was little, and reading books like The Borrowers. I liked making little tables and chairs from empty spools of thread, and towers from cardboard tubes, etc. I definitely had as much fun as they did making this house.

Hee! Adorable. :)

Thanks! Your snowmen house cake partly inspired me for the pretzel houses!

Lovely pics of lovely folk! The houses are adorable, and very creative, and so, obviously, are your nieces! Clearly they take after their aunt. Thanks for sharing. A very merry Christmas and wonderful New Year to you and yours!

The cardboard box house is great!
When I saw the first picture, I thought it was a book shelf... but it could be.
Very Cool!

[identity profile] grace-poppy.livejournal.com 2008-12-25 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I used to make book shelf houses too. :D

Aww... that's so cool! And a dollhouse with Bond in it inside a doll house :D We used to do cardboard box houses at a time for our my little ponies to live in... :P

What a great idea, a log cabin :D

[identity profile] grace-poppy.livejournal.com 2008-12-25 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
