I finally installed my first light in the roomboxes!  And I also made my first lights from scratch!  Most of the others are store-bought (and also still not installed).

I made little lanterns out of glass bottles (supplied by [profile] asyngin at [profile] miniswapsetc).  I've only installed one lantern so far, in the little sleep cabin, because that's the only room that has all the ceiling beams in place so far.  I made the lanterns by gluing strips of black fake-leather-buckram onto the bottles and then painting the glass a golden color.  I painted the black stuff too to make it look rusty and worn.  Then I just inserted my little flame bulb, attached the plug, and plugged it in (to a cunningly hidden socket in the woodwork.  Beams are handy for hiding stuff!)  Oh, and I made some little hooks to hold them too.

I'm very proud of my cute little lanterns!

With some of the original glass bottles

See?  Remember these?  Of course you don't, but I do.

It's electric!  It's electric!

In the sleep cabin

The outlet and plug are hidden in the ceiling beams

Wow, thanks! They really weren't very hard... But I was also lucky that I just happened to have all the materials I needed (which also included some jewelry findings for the lids and handles and hooks). They were fun.

Making them out of those little glass bottles (I've had some for years! never did anything with them) is so very clever. They look great, especially when lit up! So warm and inviting.

Thank you! It took me ages to have the bottle idea. I was going to use some plastic tubing, but I was worried about melting (even though most dollhouse lights involve plastic - I was just nervous, because maybe they use SPECIAL plastic, and I might use the wrong kind, oh no!) and then I didn't know how I would manage glass tubing, and then *ding!* the idea just popped into my head.

Very, very cool. Perhaps you could come and install some in the hallway of my flat? There is something wrong with the wiring and I'm too terrified of electricity (and lazy) to do something about it, but I think these would do just fine!

Sure! Do you think one or two will be enough for your hallway? You don't need to SEE, right? You just need little blips of light like on an airport landing strip? ;D

These are awesome! Do you think it would work in a colonial 1776 roombox I made which would have to be a candle light for that time period. What kind of light bulb & cord did you use? I'd like to hang it from the ceiling beams and then I could hide the cord.

Sure, I think it would work for then! And they also had oil lamps then. I used a flame-shaped bulb that was sold by itself with just a regular wire cord - a "flame tip grain-of-rice bulb". Actually, I'll take a picture for you and post it above.

It's very bright, and now that I read about it, I realize it's one of the brightest. Next time I think I might try a "micro-flame bulb".

Ceiling beams are FUN. They're great for hiding tape wire too - even though it's flat, it still looks bumpy sometimes. And ceiling beams just instantly look cool with little effort. ;D

Oh, here's a link to the bulbs:
