My friend ldhenson has been sewing the most amazing and adorable things recently.  A bat, a dragon, a Batarang, and a Cornetto ice cream.  I can't decide which I like best!

Wow - they're so neatly-done! That seems hard to do by hand, but I'm sure you can't use a sewing machine for something so small. The ice cream cone is brilliant. *G*

Yeah, it's all by hand. Some of the tiny toys in the book can be done by machine, so theoretically it's possible, but it would take someone far more coordinated than I and I don't have a machine anyway.

Haha, the ice cream can sit on my desk and it won't melt.

Hmmm... must be my default one; I got on-line via interest in the Lord of the Rings. Those are 3 of the four "hobbits" from a fun photo shoot they did; I like to call them the "Reservoir Hobbits", ala "Reservoir Dogs".

Which is how I ended up seeing your creations, seeing as how the "hobbit" Billy Boyd acted in "Master and Commander", which got me to read the books, which got my friend tootsiemuppet (a fellow LOTR nutter) to read the books and OBSESS about them... which lead her to fellow Master and Commander fanatic Grace Poppy... who featured your toys!

I checked out your page; are the "newsboys" your creation, based on historical fact?

I fell hard for the LOTR movies when they came out...and my friends had to drag me to see FOTR in the first place! And I ended up loving it more than they did. LOTR's actually responsible for getting me into sewing, as I used to lurk on the LOTR costume group on Yahoo. I never made a replica costume, but it did motivate me to attempt my first outfit (LOTR-influenced of course). Funny where fandom leads you, isn't it...

You mean my website, No. 9 Duane Street? That's all facts, the results of my research into the real NYC newsboys' lodging houses at the turn of the century. It was sparked by my interest in Newsies, which led me to look into the real history.

*L*! Ditto - I was a diehard bookfan and thought the movies would be terrible. Ooo - LOTR costuming - cool.

"Newsies" - that was a... Disney musical from, geez... 10 years ago or so? Very cool. Are you into the Master and Commander stuff at all, too (i.e., the Patrick O'Brien books)?

Not a bad guess - although I was off by 5 years. But... Christian Bale?!?!? Was the lead? My - he has had an even more varied career than I realized. I'll have to check that out one day - thanks!

That was my reaction, too. "What? He...what?!" And the only reason I saw it is that I became a bit of a Bale fan after Batman Begins (another movie my friends had to drag me to; I'm beginning to think they know more about what movies I'll like than I do). Newsies isn't really my type of movie, but the period setting grabbed me.

I came to M&C (and thus met grace_poppy) by way of Russell Crowe, whom I've been a fan of for a long time. The setting helped, too, as I also like Sharpe and Hornblower. I've read the first couple books, and it's only lack of time that keeps me from getting deeper into it.

I forgot Christian Bale was in Newsies! Was he also in Swing Kids? Or was that Ethan Hawk? And/or Dead Poets Society? I get all those guys mixed up. Usually it's "Christian Bale, or that other guy who isn't Christian Bale."

I just saw Christian Bale in 'Empire of the Sun' for the first time since I was old enough to appreciate it, and he was so good for a little youngster!!

Oh, I forgot he was the "boy" in Henry V too! (And I just looked him up and saw that he was indeed in Swing Kids, but it was Ethan Hawke in Dead Poets Society.)

He amazes me in Empire of the Sun. It's a hard movie to sit through at my age, let alone make the movie at the age he was then.

I've also never been able to get all the way through Swing Kids, the presence of CB and Robert Sean Leonard notwithstanding. I have an interest in WWII, but I'm also a bit of a wuss.
